3G Optimisation Conference & Exhibition, 18th - 19th March 2009, Berlin, Germany

Post-Conference Workshop

Friday 14th March 2008

Optimisation of the 900MHz Spectrum for 3G Use

Workshop Leaders:

  • Mustafa Saglam, Engineer, Senior Staff, Engineering Services Group, Qualcomm Inc.
  • Akos Kezdy, Staff Engineer, Engineering Services Group (ESG), Qualcomm CDMA Technologies

Objectives

This workshop is designed to give attendees an understanding of the technical challenges of deploying and optimising the 3G network when deploying UMTS 900. The workshop will discuss the potential problems with fragmented spectrum allocation and the changes that need to be made to optimise the UMTS 900 network, as well as the technical strategies that operators can employ to make the network as efficient as possible. Who will benefit?

The workshop is designed for the senior decision makers involved in the network strategy and deployment areas. CTOs, Senior Engineers, Network Architects, Spectrum Technology Managers, Strategy and Planning Directors would benefit most from this workshop.

Registration and Coffee

09:00
Session 1: Deploying UMTS 900
  • Deploying UMTS 900 alongside GSM 900. What are the potential problems that will arise from this combination?
  • Recycling and re-using cell sites for UMTS 900
  • Site planning for new cell sites and diminishing the interference problems
  • Where should operators focus their efforts when deploying UMTS 900?
Session 2: Strategies for Improving In-Building Coverage and Coverage in Rural Areas
  • Should operators focus their efforts on UMTS 900 for in-building as an alternative to femtocells or do femtocells compliment UMTS 900?
  • Overcoming the problem of dropped calls caused by low user-end handset power and femtocells with UMTS 900
  • What is the ability of the 900MHz spectrum to support additional services other than voice?
  • Strategies to improve coverage in rural areas using UMTS 900
Networking Lunch
Session 3: Optimising Fragmented Spectrum Allocations
  • Re-negotiating spectrum allocations between difference operators in the same market
  • Discussing possible solutions
  • Coordinating deployment with another operator by aligning frequency bands alongside one another
Session 4: Overcoming Problems with Interference
  • Diminishing interference problems with suitable radio and site planning
  • Using the ‘sandwich’ frequency arrangement to reduce interference
  • Examining the minimum carrier separation needed between:
    • a UMTS network and a GSM network
    • two UMTS networks
  • Successfully sharing a band between two networks
Session 5: Discussing Best Practices
  • Open discussion to share best practices
